Fall Candle Styling: Simple Ideas for a Warm and Inviting Home

There's something special about candlelight in the fall. As the days grow shorter and the evenings get cooler, candles bring warmth and character to our homes. Whether you're setting the table for Thanksgiving, decorating for the season, or settling in for a quiet evening, the right candles can make all the difference.

At Sunbeam Candles, we've been handcrafting candles in New York's Finger Lakes region for over 20 years. Here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy candlelight throughout the fall, along with a few simple tips for getting the best burn from your candles.

Set the Fall Table with Pure Beeswax Candles

When it comes to dining, we almost always recommend unscented candles. They provide beautiful, warm light without competing with the aromas of the food you're serving.

Our Beeswax Basics collection includes pure beeswax tapers, pillars, votives, and tealights, all handcrafted with 100% cotton wicks. Pure beeswax has a naturally subtle honey aroma and produces a beautiful golden glow.

A few ideas for your fall table:

  • Beeswax tapers: Arrange natural beeswax tapers along the center of your table for a classic look. For a little seasonal color, try hunter green, crimson, or black.

  • Votives and tealights: Group several candles in glass holders for a soft, welcoming glow. They're especially nice for smaller tables where tall candles might get in the way of conversation.

  • Beeswax pillars: Use pillars of varying heights on a sideboard or buffet table to add warmth and dimension.

For a simple centerpiece, combine natural beeswax candles with a few small pumpkins or seasonal greenery. Just be sure to keep dried leaves, branches, and other decorations safely away from the flames.

Bring the Scents of Fall Indoors with Ash + Amber

Fall is a wonderful time to enjoy scented candles, especially when you're spending more time indoors.

Our Ash + Amber collection features hand-poured candles made with soy wax, essential oils & natural botanical fragrances, never synthetic fragrance. Each candle comes in a classic amber glass jar that looks right at home on a coffee table, bookshelf, or kitchen counter.

For the fall season, a few favorites include:

  • Pumpkin & Spice: A seasonal favorite that brings the warmth of autumn into your home.

  • Farmhouse Cider: A welcoming choice for crisp fall days and evenings.

  • Autumn Porridge: A comforting fragrance that's especially fitting as the weather cools.

Our year-round fragrances, including Cinnamon Vanilla Latte, Grandpa's Pipe, and Sonoma Wilderness, are also wonderful choices for fall.

Try placing an Ash + Amber candle on a coffee table or in a favorite reading corner. A single candle can add both fragrance and a welcoming glow without overwhelming the room.

Each 6-ounce candle offers approximately 30 hours of burn time, making it easy to enjoy throughout the season.

Decorate with Handcrafted Beeswax Specialty Shapes

Candles don't have to be burning to add something special to a room. Our sculpted beeswax candles are just as beautiful on display, and many have become longtime favorites among Sunbeam customers.

For autumn decorating, we especially love:

  • Beeswax Pumpkins: A natural fit for fall tables, mantels, and entryways. Our Small Pumpkin is an original Sunbeam design.

  • Wise Owl: One of our original designs, available in natural or black beeswax. A distinctive addition to fall displays.

  • Pine Cones: Available in different sizes, these sculpted beeswax candles look especially nice alongside seasonal greenery and natural wood accents.

  • Two-Faced Jack-O'-Lantern: Another Sunbeam Original, featuring a happy face on one side and a scary face on the other. Available in orange or black, it's a fun choice for Halloween decorating.

Try grouping a few different shapes together on a wooden tray or mantel, or combine one sculpted candle with simple beeswax pillars for a balanced display.

These candles also make thoughtful seasonal gifts, especially for anyone who appreciates handmade products.

When burning sculpted candles, always use a wide, heat-resistant plate or holder to catch dripping wax. Their unique shapes mean they may burn differently than traditional pillars, and wider designs benefit from longer burn sessions that allow the wax to melt evenly across the top.

Simple Candle Care Tips for a Better Burn

Good candle care makes a real difference. Whether you're burning beeswax pillars, specialty shapes, or scented container candles, a few easy habits can help your candles burn more evenly, last longer, and minimize unnecessary soot.

1. Keep your wicks trimmed.

Before lighting, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch. A properly maintained wick helps keep the flame at a manageable size and reduces smoking.

2. Allow a full melt pool to develop.

One of the most important things you can do for your candles is to give them enough time to burn properly.

For beeswax pillars, wider-diameter specialty shapes, and container candles, we recommend allowing the melted wax to reach the outer edges of the candle before extinguishing it, particularly during the first few burns. This helps prevent tunneling, where the candle burns down through the center and leaves unused wax around the sides.

As a general guideline, allow approximately one hour of burn time for each inch of candle diameter, while always following the candle's specific burn instructions and maximum recommended burn time.

Some intricately sculpted candles may melt less uniformly because of their shapes, but allowing sufficient burn time will help you get the most from your candle.

3. Keep candles away from drafts.

Open windows, fans, and heating vents can cause flames to flicker excessively, leading to uneven burning and soot.

4. Always use an appropriate candle holder.

Place candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces, away from curtains, decorations, and anything flammable. For pillars and sculpted candles, choose a holder large enough to catch any melted wax.

Never leave a burning candle unattended.

5. Extinguish candles carefully.

A candle snuffer is a simple way to extinguish the flame while minimizing smoke. Allow the wax and container to cool before handling or moving the candle.

How to Store Candles as the Seasons Change

If you're putting away seasonal candles for next year, a little care will help keep them looking their best.

Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Beeswax can soften or change shape when exposed to excessive heat, so avoid leaving candles in sunny windows or hot cars.

You may also notice a light, powdery white coating developing on natural beeswax over time. This is called bloom, and it's a normal characteristic of pure beeswax. Many beeswax enthusiasts appreciate this natural finish, but it can also be gently buffed away with a soft cloth or with a hair dryer or heat gun on a low setting.

A Few Thoughtful Fall Gift Ideas

Candles make wonderful gifts throughout the season, whether you're visiting friends, attending a fall gathering, or getting an early start on holiday shopping.

Here are a few simple combinations:

  • For the dinner host: A pair of natural beeswax tapers or a set of beeswax votives.

  • For someone who loves fall fragrances: An Ash + Amber candle in Pumpkin & Spice, Farmhouse Cider, or Autumn Porridge.

  • For the nature lover: A sculpted beeswax pine cone, Wise Owl, or pumpkin candle.

  • For the candle enthusiast: A combination of pure beeswax pillars and tealights for everyday enjoyment.

Handcrafted candles are useful, beautiful, and easy to enjoy long after the occasion has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fall Candles

What are the best candles for a fall dinner table?

We recommend unscented pure beeswax candles for dining. Tapers, votives, and tealights provide warm light without competing with the aromas of your meal.

Are beeswax candles clean-burning?

Pure beeswax candles can burn with very little visible soot when properly wicked and maintained. Like all candles, they produce some combustion emissions, so proper wick trimming, avoiding drafts, and reasonable ventilation are important.

How long should I burn a beeswax pillar candle?

For the best results, allow enough time for the melted wax to reach the outer edges of the candle before extinguishing it, particularly during the first few burns. A general guideline is approximately one hour per inch of diameter, provided this doesn't exceed the candle's recommended maximum burn time. This helps prevent tunneling and allows more of the wax to be used.

What's the difference between beeswax candles and scented container candles?

Our Beeswax Basics candles are made with pure beeswax and contain no added fragrance. Our Ash + Amber candles use soy wax, essential oils and natural botanical fragrances to offer a variety of scent experiences.

What candle fragrances are good for fall?

Warm spices, comforting bakery-inspired fragrances, apple notes, and woodsy scents are popular choices for autumn. Our Ash + Amber fall collection includes Pumpkin & Spice, Farmhouse Cider, and Autumn Porridge.

Can sculpted beeswax candles be burned?

Absolutely! Our sculpted beeswax candles are made to be enjoyed both as decorative pieces and as burning candles. Because of their unique shapes, they should always be burned on a suitable heat-resistant holder that can catch any dripping wax. For wider specialty shapes, allowing a full melt pool to develop helps prevent tunneling and makes better use of the beeswax.
